"Kio” was written by the Japanese composer Michio Mamiya — one of Japan’s leading composers today — as an homage to the Japanese poet Kio Kuroda. The piece is a conversation between two forces, the shakuhachi and cello, that pulls on a variety of technique between the two instruments.
The duo was performed by Kojiro Umezaki and Yo-Yo Ma as part of the Silk Road Ensemble's concert at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing in November 2016.
