Έξι χρόνια πριν, στις 11 Μαρτίου 2011 η Ιαπωνία ταρακουνήθηκε από τον σεισμό των 9 βαθμών που χτύπησε ανατολικά του Σεντάι, στο Νησί Χονσού. Η διάρκειά του σπάει τα ρεκόρ, κρατώντας πέντε εφιαλτικά λεπτά.
Ακριβώς έξι χρόνια μετά οι Ιάπωνες θα θυμηθούν για μία ακόμη φορά την τραγική αλληλουχία των γεγονότων: τις ορδές των τρομαγμένων εργαζόμενων που εγκατέλειπαν βιαστικά τους ουρανοξύστες στο Τόκιο, τα τραίνα που είχαν ανατραπεί στις βορειοανατολικές επαρχίες, τις φοβερές εικόνες που δεν μπορούσε κανείς να πιστέψει, τις πόλεις που καλύφθηκαν από το νερό μετά το τσουνάμι, την αδυναμία να επικοινωνήσουν με τους δικούς τους, τους χιλιάδες ανθρώπους που αγνοούνται.
Στο τέλος εκείνης της ημέρας άρχισαν να έρχονται τα πρώτα ανησυχητικά σημάδια από τους δύο αντιδραστήρες του πυρηνικού σταθμού της Φουκουσίμα (τον Ντάισι και τον Ντάινι), και ακολούθησε η οδηγία για εκκένωση του σταθμού και η απομάκρυνση των κατοίκων των γύρω περιοχών, αρχικά σε μια περίμετρο 2, μετά 3 και τέλος 10 χιλιομέτρων.

Essence. As the name suggests, this album highlights the significant individual feature of each track. This thematic instrumental album by Pt. Santosh Sant takes the listener through a variety of moods. It not only showcases the versatility of Indian Classical Music but also brings forth Santosh's musical calibre.
About Music:
The album opens with a sentimental track aptly titled 'Essence of Jhinjhoti'. A popular Indian raga, here, Santosh has treated Jhinjhoti in a very innovative manner. The Alaap portion has been improvised with the related chords of the keyboard. The Jod blends well with the melody on the guitar and keyboard while the Drut (fast tempo) set to Teen Taal concludes the composition with the Tabla for accompaniment.
'Theme Indiana' is a romantic composition. Influenced by the flavour of Western music, Santosh has imaginatively blended the sound of the English flute with that of the Bansuri, thus lending an overall soothing tone to the track.
'Echoes of Valley' is inspired by the folk music of Mizoram, a north-eastern state of India. Based on Raga Pahadi, this track re-kindles in the listener a love for nature and the natural elements, thus transporting them to the beauteous Indian valleys.
The next track 'Call of Krishna' is a romantic composition based on the night raga Maanj-Khamaj. The sounds emanating from Santosh's flute are reminiscent of a shepherd's call to his beloved, from across the river.
'The Desert' is a track based on raga Mishra-Maand, influenced by the folk music of Rajasthan. It is an instrumental version of the popular Rajasthani song 'Kesariya Balama' which evokes feelings of romanticism as the girl welcomes her beloved to her homeland even as she subtly conveys her desires to him.
The concluding track 'Colours of Bhoopali' is based on the evening raga Bhoopali. By giving it a devotional twist, Santosh has improvised the Alaap and Jod portions to be in sync with the keyboard and guitar. Set to Jhaptaal of 10 beats, this haunting melody is a befitting closure to this innovative album by Pt. Santosh Sant.

Στον Πλαταμώνα το βορειότερο άκρο του μυκηναϊκού πολιτισμού
Πλούσια κτερισμένα νεκροταφεία με τάφους που ανοίγονται ξανά και ξανά -έως και τρεις φορές- και επαναχρησιμοποιούνται και ήρθαν στο φως κατά τη διάνοιξη της ΠΑΘΕ στην περιοχή του Πλαταμώνα, αποδεικνύουν ότι ο Μακεδονικός Όλυμπος αποτελεί το βορειότερο άκρο του μυκηναϊκού πολιτισμού, του σπουδαίου αυτού οικονομικού και κοινωνικού συστήματος στον ελλαδικό χώρο.
Τα νεκροταφεία κατά την Ύστερη Εποχή του Χαλκού, περίπου στον 17ο π.Χ. αιώνα, έχουν μετακινηθεί έξω από τους οικισμούς, περιλαμβάνουν μεγάλους και περίτεχνους τάφους, κατάλληλους για πολλαπλούς ενταφιασμούς, ενώ μαζί με τους νεκρούς τοποθετούνται πολύτιμα αντικείμενα.
Goya etchings found in French chateau are 'once in a lifetime discovery'

A pristine set of Goya’s famous bullfighting etchings, valued at up to £500,000, has been discovered in an old ledger in the library of a French chateau.
The etchings had been carefully mounted in the ledger using a dot of glue in each corner.

The library was full of handsomely bound volumes, but at the back of one shelf the owners found a drab ledger, holding a rather dull series of 90 French military prints – and a few pages further on, a complete pristine set of the first edition of Goya’s La Tauromaquia etchings, apparently forgotten about for more than 150 years.
Severine Nackers, head of prints at Sotheby’s in London, where the set will be sold in April, described the prints, still in the 19th-century ledger ruled for columns of accounts, as “a once in a lifetime discovery”.

Gladstone Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Wangechi Mutu. The title for this exhibition comes from the Gikuyu words for mud and trees, the prima materia for this body of work. Expanding her sculptural practice, this installation proposes an alternative to the systemic modes of representation in both Western and Eastern traditions by reimagining and recontextualizing the relations between the body, the natural world, and social forces. Well known for collages of hybrid forms drawn from folklore, popular culture, and art history, this new work marks an evolution in Mutu’s critique of the construction of self-image. The complex texture and form that these figures offer prompt inquiry into the relationship between human existence and environment, producing interactions both intimate and challenging.

Cairo mud pit yields two pharaoh statues more than 3,000 years old

CAIRO – Archaeologists in a muddy pit in a Cairo suburb on Thursday uncovered two pharaonic statues dating back more than 3,000 years.
The relics were found in Mattarya district, site of the ancient Pharaonic capital of Heliopolis and today a sprawl of working and middle class districts in northeastern Cairo.
The statues, discovered on wasteland between crumbling apartment blocks, are thought to represent Pharaohs from the 19th dynasty, which ruled from 1314 to 1200 BC.

Sir Howard Hodgkin, who has died aged 84, was something of a rebel, though anyone meeting him for the first time would not readily have guessed so. His voice, always fairly plummy, made him sound the very epitome of respectability, though he was by no means a ready talker on the subject that concerned him most: painting. Painting was his life-long passion, of course – he knew that he wanted to be a painter and nothing but a painter from the age of five, immediately after he had drawn a picture of a woman with a red face and bushy hair – but he always found it difficult to talk about that which consumed him until his dying day. In fact, he could be maddeningly obtuse, high-handed, and even downright patronising when questioned about his own work. Or just puzzlingly, vexingly silent, looking down.
