by Henry Raeburn (1756 – 1823)

The Reverend Robert Walker skating on Duddingston Loch (1784) . Picture: Wikimedia

Perhaps the most famous of all Scottish paintings, Henry Raeburn’s masterpiece depicts Rev Robert Walker, a member of the first figure skating club in the world. The Edinburgh Skating club used to meet on either Lochend or Duddingston Loch, depending on which had frozen over. Walker’s father had been a minister in Rotterdam, meaning that, as a child, he had learned to skate on the Netherlands’ frozen canals.

The composition and subject matter of the painting are unusual among Scottish paintings. Raeburn shows Walker in the “travelling position”, with arms folded and leg extended. His stark black outfit contrasts strongly with the misty backdrop, and is reminiscent of 17th century Dutch art. The technical skill required to paint the ribbons on Walker’s skates, and the grooves carved into the ice, makes this painting particularly accomplished.

Floral fixation: blooming Belgian statues

Belgian artist Geoffroy Mottart’s flowery creations illuminate the forgotten corners of Brussels’s public parks. Frustrated with working in a flower shop, Mottart decided to use his floristry skills in a different context: decorating antique busts across the Belgian capital with unique floral hairstyles and beards. “Most people pass by these statues without paying attention to them,” he explains. “By placing a floral touch in spaces or on objects, spectators pay attention to my work and they rediscover what is around it.” The arrangements don’t stay up for more than a week, and he reassures those who worry he will vandalise the sculptures: “My aim is to celebrate them, not to destroy them.”

Tajikistan Folk Music

Tajik folk music is traditionally divided into three styles, Pamir (Mountain-Badakhshan province), Central Kuhistoni (Gissar, Kulyab, Garm provinces) and Sogdiana's northern style; the latter is part of the same musical culture as the adjacent regions of Uzbekistan (Kashkadarya Province and Surkhandarya Province). There are many kinds of songs, both lyrical and instrument, including work songs, ceremonial, funeral, wedding and musical epics, especially the central Tajik heroic legend Gurugli also known as "Omar Sham Sham".

Rocky Dawuni "Shine A Light"

"Shine A Light” by Rocky Dawuni combines the sounds of New Orleans with reggae and samba to create an anthem of positivity. The song and video celebrate the power of our shared humanity and the importance of being courageous to tap into your own power of expression. In a time of great uncertainty in our world, "Shine a Light” reminds the listener to uphold the positive and recognize that we are all agents of hope and change. The brand new video for the track which was filmed Los Angeles, directed by renowned photographer Myra Vides and produced by Cary Sullivan is a tribute to joy in all of its organic expressions.

International musician and activist, Rocky Dawuni originally from Ghana, West Africa, straddles the boundaries between Africa, the Caribbean and the U.S. to create his appealing Afro Roots sound that unites generations and cultures. A galvanizing performer, Dawuni has shared the stage with Stevie Wonder, Janelle Monae and John Legend, among many others. Named one of Africa's Top 10 global stars by CNN, he has showcased his talent at prestigious venues and events including The Kennedy Center, Montreux Jazz Festival and The Hollywood Bowl. Detroit Institute of Arts welcomes a two new 'guests of honor'

“John Barnard,” 1744, John Michael Rysbrack, marble. Lent by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Purchase, Gift of J. Pierpont Morgan, The Moses Lazarus Collection, Gift of Sarah and Josephine Lazarus, Bequest of Kate Read Blacque, in memory of her husband, Valentine Alexander Blacque, and Bequests of Mary Clark Thompson and Barbara S. Adler, by exchange, 1976 (1976.330).

DETROIT, MICH.- The Detroit Institute of Arts welcomes two new “guests of honor”: a terracotta model and a marble bust of a young boy, John Barnard, by John Michael Rysbrack. The model is on loan from a private collector and the bust is on loan from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Shown together for the first time, these immaculately preserved portraits provide a rare glimpse of Rysbrack’s creative process. The sculptures, both of which the artist signed and dated, showcase both Rysbrack’s mastery of modeling terracotta, and his exceptional skill as a marble carver. They will be on view through summer 2018.
