Furtwängler has always been Bruckner’s greatest exponent. In 1942, the Telefunken firm convinced Furtwängler to experiment the improvements of the recording techniques. Having consented, he chose to do the famous Adagio from Bruckner’s 7th Symphony (…), as he himself put it, whether the microphones would be able to pick up the whole scope of his orchestra, and particularly the famous Berlin contrabassi. The results were astonishing. This particular Bruckner performance is Furtwängler’s slowest, and yet the most intensely sustained one. Again, the tragic element and grandeur are unequalled here. This is a ‘’desert island’’ recording, fortunately restored for music lovers of this world to cherish all their life.
