Chouk Bwa Libète

Chouk Bwa Libète is a traditional Haitian roots band—“Mizik Rasin.” The source of this music is the essential elements of Haitian Vodou: rhythms, songs and dances. These are the roots, torn from Africa, secretly replanted in a new land. And the drums grew again. The four drummers, who move freely between rhythms, are keepers of cultural memories. The dance is neither aesthetic nor premeditated, it is real. The lead singer’s voice rises effortlessly above the drums. His message expresses the suffering but also the tireless life force of the Haitian people. With clear eyes, Chouk Bwa Libète continues the tradition of groups like Boukman Eksperyans, Boukan Ginen, or Rasin Mapou de Azor. The members of the band live in Gonaives, an area of Haiti steeped in Vodou.
