From Burkina Faso, Mamadou Sanou aka Baba Commandant and his band blend the Mandingue musical traditions of their region with their love for the music of Fela Kuti, King Sunny Adé and Moussa Doumbia. Brought to the world on vinyl via the great Sublime Frequencies label with their fiery debut Juguya, Baba Commanadant & The Mandingo Band’s first visit to the UK is sure to be an irresistibly sweaty, funky affair of driving, powerhouse rhythms and call and response vocal lines. As well as his commanding rhythmic bark, Baba Commandant also plays the six-stringed donso ngoni, enforcing the hypnotic insistence of the Mandingo Band’s beat. It’s going to be impossible to keep your feet still when these folks are tearing up the Old Town Hall.
