What does one wandering yogi say to another? They seem to speak in a coded language, one in which fish climb up trees and the rabbit hunts in the forest! Give a nod of greeting for me, the song says, to that yogi who will understand my language.

Jamali Bai was a powerful voice among the women folk singers of Bikaner, Rajasthan, and passed away in July 2016. She sang traditional folk songs as well as the nirgun songs of Kabir, Bhavani Nath, Gorakhnath and others mystics, which she learnt from her aunt Shabana’s satsangs. She belonged to the Dholi community of musicians and drummers, who derive their name from the dhol (drum), who traditionally performed for their patrons to make auspicious the start of any new project. Jamali Bai was always accompanied on the harmonium by her husband, Ramzan Khan, whom she considered her primary musical friend and guru.

Jamali Bai sang this song on the 5th night of the Rajasthan Kabir Yatra – a travelling festival, which toured 7 villages with 13 singers of Bhakti, Sufi and Baul poetry in February 2012. The Yatra was organised by Lokayan in Bikaner (www.lokayan.org) in partnership with the Kabir Project, Bangalore. In this video we see 69-year old Gavra Devi, another well-known local folk singer, sitting behind Jamali Bai and clapping along.
