Researchers discovered the 29 pebble fragments in Italy, which they believe
were used in a Paleolithic funeral ritual, before being smashed
In a bizarre symbolic ritual, Paleolithic people may have 'killed' objects to remove their power after they had been used to decorate the dead.
Researchers have discovered broken pebbles in Liguria, Italy that they believe date back 12,000 years.
The pebbles would have been used as spatulas to apply earth paste to the dead, before being broken and discarded.
