Philip Glass Celebrates His 80th Birthday With an 11th Symphony

On Tuesday the composer Philip Glass will celebrate his 80th birthday at Carnegie Hall with the world premiere of his Symphony No. 11, performed by the Bruckner Orchestra Linz under Dennis Russell Davies. Mr. Glass is best known for his film scores (“The Truman Show,” “The Hours,” “Notes on a Scandal”) and for experimental operas like “Einstein on the Beach,” but he has been equally prolific in more traditional genres like the symphony and the string quartet.
