Raga Hanskinkini-Soumik Datta (Sarod)-HCL Maestros in Studio Live @The Peninsula Studios

Raga Hanskinkini 

is a rare evening raga that combines romantic shades of both Bhimpalasi and Khamaj. As a result it also evokes some characteristics of the pensive raga Jog. This rendition opens with an alap and jod to expose the key melodic phrases of Hanskinkini. This is followed by an exploration of bol-vistar and toda-tan (signature cross-plucked rhythms, typical of the Senia Shahjahanpur style of sarod playing) within the framework of a majestic 16 beat cycle. 

Soumik Datta

is a British Indian musician and composer, specializing on the 19 stringed fretless instrument, Sarod.

Brought up in London, Soumik was trained by the late Padmabhushan Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta in the Senia Shahjahanpur style of Sarod playing. He also holds a Masters in western music composition from Trinity College of Music, London. 

Dubbed 'British Sarod Maestro' (Time Out), Soumik has composed and released seven albums. He first made his mark with Fretless which showcased him as 'a magnificent Indian classical Sarod player with a rare melodic awareness’ (Times of India). While Soumik continued to present traditional Hindustani classical concerts, he began to explore ways of bridging Indian music with global music forms.
