This “raga” belongs to the Carnatic system, but it has received the best attention of some of the leading lights of Hindustani music who have popularised it on the concert platform all over North India.
“Latangi” is one of the 72 “melakarta” modes devised by Pandit Vyankata Makhi, the great musicologist of the Carnatic tradition. The “raga” strikes as a fascinating combination of the Hindustani “ragas” “Puriya-Dhanashri” and “Yaman” Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffar Khan presents “Latangi”, first in “alap” and then in “gat” in “vilambit” and “drut”, both set to “teentaal” of 16 “matras”.
