Nepal: The Country and the People
Situated in the world’s highest mountain range, the Himalayas, Nepal is the home of the Mount Everest. It is a Hindu kingdom with nearly 21 million inhabitants, of which approximately three quarters are Hindus, the rest Buddhists and some animists belonging to the aboriginal communities. The majority of the population are of two distinct racial stocks: the Mongolians from the north and the Aryans from the south. The blending of these two main races, with the isolation of the mountain habitations at varying altitudes up to eight or nine thousand feet, has produced a number of ethnic sub groups, each with special aptitudes and particular social habits. For example, the Gurkhas and the Gurungs, living in the oak and pine valleys at an altitude of more than seven thousand feet, are well known for their prowess in the battlefield. In comparison, the Newars, the earlier inhabitants of the Kathmandu valley at about four thousand and five hundred feet in southern Nepal with large forests of the tropical kind, are good farmers and superb craftsmen. The pagoda form in temple architecture is claimed to have originated in this Himalayan kingdom before travelling to many lands in the Far East, including China and Japan...
