This improvisation is based on a folk dance song from the Black Sea region, where numerous traditions overlapped and influenced each other. The melody of this piece is widely spread and various traditions have adapted different versions and their own lyrics to it. The odd rhythm of 7 beats (2+2+3) gives specific accents, which are inspiration and accompaniment for many folk dances in the region. The term tarabuk is used for the darabuka in these regions, but other names are in use as well, such as darbuka, dumbelek, tarambuka and many others. This improvisation was performed on oud with a deliberate small ‘buzz’ created by adding a small piece of wood at the top of the neck, as a sort of natural distortion. This was done in order to provide a colour of sound with a flavour of the shargiya lute (cousin of the Turkish bağlama), which often accompanies these type of dance songs. The lively melody has a restless character and describes the feelings of the heart, while the tricky 7-beats rhythm influences the heart to move the body in this dashing dance composition.
